
Rajguru Aggavamsa Mahathera was a great patron and prominent monastic leader of the Buddhist community in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. He was born on 23rd November 1913 in Kutubdia. His birth name was Fulnath Tanchangya. From an early age, he had a deep interest in spiritual practice and received his primary and secondary education from various schools.
Focusing on religious education, he entered the Theravāda Buddhist order and in 1958, he founded the Parbatya Chattagram Bhikkhu Samiti, which later became known as the Parbatya Bhikkhu Sangha Bangladesh (PBSB). In 1956, he had the honor of representing Bangladesh at the Sixth Buddhist Council organized by UNESCO, a highly prestigious responsibility. Throughout his life, he provided leadership in the education, discipline, and charitable activities of countless monks.
He was awarded the honorary titles “Tipitaka Visaradha” and “Aggamahāsaddhammajotikādhaja”, recognizing his deep wisdom and contributions to Buddhism. He passed away on 5th January 2008 in Rangamati. The life of Rajguru Aggavamsa Mahathera remains a symbol of great ideals and selfless dedication, continuing to inspire the work and mission of PBSB to this day.
